What is the Stanislavski system?
The Stanislavski system is the actor-training approach Konstantin Stanislavski developed in the early twentieth century at the Moscow Art Theatre, which he co-founded in 1898. Actors work from the play's given circumstances, pursue the character's objectives (tasks), and use the "magic if" to imagine themselves in the situation. His later work moved from analysis at the table toward physical action. Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Sanford Meisner each built their American techniques on it.
